A week after a cybercriminal group claimed to steal sensitive personal data on thousands of current and former FBI employees, the bureau is still assessing the extent of the damage while facing internal criticism about the agency’s handling of the incident.

Michael Burgwald, the FBI’s Washington Field Office counterterrorism chief and his deputy Courtland Rae, were removed from their positions on Friday and transferred to FBI headquarters.

Confirmation of an ongoing investigation came hours after a cybercriminal group known as ShinyHunters posted a message online claiming it had stolen “very sensitive” data on “almost all” FBI agents, as well as those who had applied for jobs at the bureau.

Prosecutors are expected to charge a man soon for allegedly threatening Katie Miller, the wife of Stephen Miller, despite FBI fears that no federal crime was committed, according to a report. The bureau has not yet publicly confirmed a breach, but has told its agents that their personal information and Social Security numbers were exposed.

The search follows an earlier search that uncovered more than one million digital files from hard drives inside the home.
